Found across Europe and Asia, it favours farmland, hedgerows, open woodland and villages, nesting in tree holes, old walls and nest boxes in loose colonies. Highly gregarious outside the breeding season, it forms mixed flocks with other finches and buntings to forage on seeds and grain stubble.
